Who Killed Cock Robin

Who Killed Cock Robin (Trad.)
Who killed Cock Robin?
Who killed Cock Robin?
I, said the Sparrow,
With my little bow and arrow,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who saw him die?
Who saw him die?
I, said the Fly,
With my little teensy eye,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who caught his blood?
Who caught his blood?
I, said the Fish,
With my little earthen dish,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who made his coffin?
Who made his coffin?
I, said the Snipe,
With my little pocket knife,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who dug his grave?
Who dug his grave?
I, said the Crow,
With my little spade and hoe,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who lowered him down?
Who lowered him down?
I, said the Crane,
With my little silver chain,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who pat his grave?
Who pat his grave?
I, said the Duck,
With my big ol’ splatter foot,
It was I, oh it was I.
Who preached the funeral?
Who preached the funeral?
I, said the Swallow,
Just as loud as I could holler,
It was I, oh it was I.

The Invitation

The Invitation
We were driving across the Driftless on a cold and cloudy day
Through the apple orchards goin’ down Galena way
Been on the road for one week now feels like two or three
Ramblin’ round and sleeping hard ain’t what it used to be
We came upon a farmhouse set along a quiet road
Willow trees and fields ‘round a’waiting to be sowed
We had an invitation should we ever be coming through
To stop and rest awhile here so that’s what we’re gonna do
Gonna unplug – Gonna recharge
Find me a book – go for a walk out in the yard
Gonna slow down – Gonna catch up
And let go of what made living so hard
There is no phone connection here, there is no internet
But we have our imaginations and a banjo with no frets
There is no television, and no radio for news
But we have a big wide-open sky for to sing up at the moon
Gonna unplug……
But all too soon the morning comes we hit the road again
Thank you for your invitation our souls are on the mend
I got unplugged – got recharged
Found me a book and went for a walk in the yard
I got slowed down – got caught up
And let go of what made living so hard

Fair and Tender Ladies

Fair and Tender Ladies
Come all you fair and tender ladies
Be careful how you court young men.
They’re like a star of a summer’s morning.
They’ll first appear and then they’re gone.
They’ll tell to you some loving story
Declare to you their love is true.
Straightway they’ll go and court some other
And that’s the love they have for you.
If I’d a’known before I courted
I never would have courted none.
I’d have locked my heart in a box all golden
And fastened it down with a silver pin.
I wish I was some little sparrow
That I had wings, could fly so high.
I’d fly away to my false true lover
And as he’s talking I’d be by.
But as I am no little sparrow
And neither have I wings to fly.
I’ll sit down here in grief and sorrow
To weep and pass my troubles by.

When This Old Hat Was New
Music by Dana Robinson - Lyrics by Hank Mattson
I am an old Cowhunter boys come listen to my tale
Memories now are twice as sweet of the old cracker trail.
Fer Jacob Summerlin we rode fences then were few
When I was just a skinny kid and this old hat was new
When the yearly ‘round up came we rode off unaware
How often we’d be preyed upon by Seminole or bear
But when the herd was sold and shipped across the blue
What bounty we’d behold my boys when this old hat was new
At the Summerlin Hotel old Jake he’d take his place
And shake our hands as we came in a smile upon his face.
His son sat at the table there and gave each man his due
In Spanish gold, believe me boy when this old hat was new
But the good times quickly changed the Country was at war
And while the battle raged up north the Federals closed our shore
But Jake the blockade runner kept goods a sailin’ through
And Cuban trade was still maintained when this old hat was new
Well we lost the war but not the land full pardons we was given
Our beef again was in demand and we thanked Jake and Heaven
But lovin’ the work ya do’s the thing it made our dreams come true
When Jake was Cracker Cowhunter King and this old hat was new
When Jake was Cracker Cowhunter King and this old hat was new

Fashioned of the Clay
by Chris Coe
Willie oh Willie wont you go my way Wont you go my way wont you go my way
Willie oh Willie wont you go my way I can’t wait ‘till the sun goes down
Mary oh Mary well the moon is drowned /The sun comes up it warms the ground
Mary oh Mary there’s a love to be found / But never till the sun goes down
Willie oh Willie wont you go my way……
Willie oh Willie well the way you’ll find / For forbidden fruit is the sweetest kind
Willie oh Willie its in my mind / That we can make the sun go down
Willie oh Willie wont you go my way……
So he set his foot on the cold clay earth /And he pushed and he pushed till he split the turf
He made a leap for life and death / Just to try to make the sun go down
And he set his foot on the narrow path / And his heart was feared but he gave a laugh
And he ran and he ran for home and hearth / Just to try to make the sun go down
Willie oh willie wont you go my way….
Willie oh willie well your race is run / The time has come and I’m all alone
Wille oh willie you’ve a fine young son / But his feet are fashioned of the clay

I got a gal, she lives up the road
Eyes are crooked and her legs is bowed
But we sure have a lot of fun
Won't you go away lazy John
chorus
Lazy John, lazy John
Won't you get your day's work all done
You're in the shade, I'm in the sun
Won't you go away lazy John
Goin' to a dance on Saturday night
Goin' to dance 'til the mornng light
Then I'm gonna bring my little baby home
Won't you go away lazy John
chorus
Every night when I get home
Peas in the pot and an old jaw bone
Here today, tomorrow you’re gone
Won’t you go away Lazy John
chorus
Work all week in the noon day sun
Fifteen cents when the week is done
Going to town going to have some fun
Won’t you go away Lazy John

Farmer's Market A-Z

Farmer’s Market A-Z
Lui Collins
There’s apples, breads, and crispy carrots
Delicatas, eggs, and eggplant
Friends to play with on the hill
Goat cheese with all sorts of herbs
Honey creamed or in the comb
And the ice cream truck out by the road
Jams and jellies, kale and leeks
Musicians playing old time tunes
Oh come oh come oh come oh come
To the farmer’s market with me
Oh come oh come oh come oh come
To the farmer’s market with me
There’s nuts and onions, peaches and quince
Radiccio and rutabegas
Squash and turnips, tomatillos
Unimagined kinds of veggies
Wagons loaded to the brim
With pumpkins extraordinary
Yummy yams and zucchini
A feast for friends and family
CHORUS
There’s aromatic anadama
Grass-fed beef raised by my neighbor
Cornflowers, dahlias, echinacea,
Fresh goat milk and herbal ice tea
A jack-o-lantern grinning by a basket
Full of crisp kohlrabi
Lambs wool fleece
Hats and mittens, soft and thick
And warm and wooly
CHORUS
There’s a never-ending overflowing
Orgy of organic produce
Queues of folks chat as they await
A raspberry smoothie to their taste
A universe of vegetation
A wonderment, an exclamation
Yoowza those are dazzling zinnias
A feast for the eyes
The rest goes in ya
CHORUS

Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Trad.)
There are loved ones in their glory
Whose dear forms we oft times miss
When you close your earthly story
Will you join them in their bliss
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by Lord by and by
There’s a better home a waiting
In the sky Lord in the sky
You remember cheerful gatherings
By the fireside long ago
And you think on tearful partings
As they left you here below
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by Lord by and by
There’s a better home a waiting
In the sky Lord in the sky
One by one the chairs are empty
One by one they went away
Now your circle is all broken
Will it be complete one day
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by Lord by and by
There’s a better home a waiting
In the sky Lord in the sky
