Scarecrow 05:50
Scarecrow Standing waist deep in a field of straw Scarecrow is waiting for his namesake to caw And call him awake like a trumpet that blows He'll rattle and shake and shout what he knows I'm over here when I should be there I run away from the things I should scare I'm stuck on a pole unused and forlorn When crow and his buddies are in Farmer Brown's corn I'm full of sunshine full of fields of hay I'll scare crows for nothing 'cause for me it's just play Shedding the old, I'm embracing the new Right here right now there's not much else I can do I cannot run, I cannot fight I'm keeping still with all of my might Stuffed full of straw in my socks and my shoes I awake in the morning covered with dew At times I look fierce but the crows aren't afraid They chuckle and cackle and they won't go away I'll be your old friend 'cause you'll recognize me It's the clothes that you gave when you created me They fly through the mountains like they see through my dreams They find shiny things in the rivers and streams They can remember when the earth, it was young And all of the creatures spoke the same mother tongue I've been a crooked man and I've hoed a crooked row And I've eaten plenty of the one they call crow After the harvest and the scythe man he come You mark my words of my remains there'll be none I'm full of sunshine full of fields of hay I'll scare crows for nothing 'cause for me it's just play I'll be your old friend 'cause you'll recognize me It's the clothes that you gave when you created me

Raspberry Cane Each and every day I wake I take a stone from off the hill I put 'em in that old stone row and make it longer still I put 'em here, put 'em there stories much the same There's never been a year gone by I ain't pulling raspberry cane I got dirty feet from pulling the plow I got hard and callused hands I'm putting the seed here in the ground 'cause it's my promised land When the full moon comes in October and the leaves have gone away You're still gonna find a little sweet green upon the raspberry cane I go down to the brook below to hear her waters sing And up on the hill old man pine he show me everything And in the towns and cities fair where no one knows my name I will sing the song pass the word along about the raspberry cane Each and every day I wake I take a stone from off the hill I put 'em in that old stone row and make it longer still I put 'em here, put 'em there stories much the same There's never been a year gone by I ain't pulling raspberry cane

Stepping Stone You take one foot forward and you are stepping on air I know no sense of weight 'cause my intentions are clear Well I've had all these troubles, but now my troubles are all gone I don't even know what the heaven was wrong Since I've found my stepping stone Some people I know, they have a beautiful vision Some people I know, they remember their dreams Me, I find it when I'm walking a shadow leaps in the corner of my eye Something will run away laughing and leave me With another stepping stone You've got to dig up your stepping stone Only your body knows Yea the earth will show you how to bring up your stepping stone Only your body knows Where to find your stepping stone Now I walk often in the forest and you never look the same One side exposed to the whether and your dark sides plain Show me your smooth white belly as I turn you over in my hands Show me another reflection of the man within this stepping stone I read you like a book of wonder and I listen to your tales Your eyes have seen the likes of trees that lived a million years ago Well I hold you at my belly as I take you upon the hill Not a bird is singing the forest, the forest is still Still for your stepping stone You've got to dig up your stepping stone Only your body knows Yea the earth will show you how to bring up your stepping stone Only your body knows Where to find your stepping stone

Child's Game 04:19
Child's Game Have you ever seen someone walking down by the tracks And wonder where they're at, babe Have you ever seen someone walking down by the tracks Ane wonder who they are Tell me why are you crying It's just a silly child's game Tell me why are you dying It's just a silly child's game Have you ever seen someone that you really love Turn and walk away Have you ever seen someone that you really love They've got nothing left to say Tell me why are you crying It's just a silly child's game Tell me why are you dying It's just a silly child's game

Coyote Hey! 04:09
Coyote Hey! You come back here upon a day A day so warm and fine A big wide grin was on your face You said that it was time You said that it was time to dance You said it's time to play But while I's lost within your song You stole my wife away Coyote Hey! Coyote Hey! Bit while I's lost within your song You stole my wife away I lay me down beside a stream To rest the weary day And when I woke I found My blues had gone away You stole my hat, stole my tie Stole my coat and shoes I stood there on my dying day With nothing left to lose Coyote Hey! Coyote Hey! I stood there on my dying day With nothing left to lose When God gave out the gifts To all the creatures that he made He told this lonesome dog to go Where all the tunes are played I hear him sing from in the wood Coming through the night time blue So keep you way from my back door You'll take my daughters too Coyote Hey! Coyote Hey! So keep you way from my back door You'll take my daughters too.

Billy Wilson 06:24
Billy Wilson Little Billy Wilson slung his pack and turned to go The road was deep with snow and a wind was rising It would be a fortnight before he'd return To the place he loved so well it was a haven Thinking about those he loves and why he walks alone To better hear the voices of the water and the stone So out there in the chilly night he says a little prayer Into thin air for all those listening Within his trusty pickup truck he drove to warmer ground To the lost and found of the city lights With one hand on his trembling heart and one hand on the wheel He thought about the deals he'd be making And on the busy street corner he opened up his case Lifted his fiddle to his chin and a smile to his face Out there in the city lights he played some reels and airs Through the vacant stares for all those listening So on he'd go from town to town for any audience he'd play Any time of day just to keep the music alive And it would happen a light would shine into somebody's face A little changes taking place a little healing He'd have 'em do a circle dance and up and down the line Little Billy'd have 'em hoot and holler and clap their hands in time And when the tune was over he'd pass around his hat They'd give him this and that for just listening When the moon turned waxed full and headed for decline The night turned blind over the staggering sea And over sweetly rutted roads Billy's truck would hum and roll And carry him toward home in the mountains lee Greeting him were silent gardens sleeping in their beds Chickadees and bluejays just waiting to be fed He put a pot of coffee on and fed those hungry birds There a song he distant heard and sat there listening

Empty Page/Start Again You've had a name from which you could call from Draw from in your sleep Find an empty page and start again A new culture a new town another lover A new friendship and I've found Another missing piece of this jungle I've seen a good ship sink and a ragged boat sail For the sailor who's on the links no dreams can ever fail How long has it been since you've felt such abandonment From the minutes you've been holding I'm gonna sell everything I'm gonna make you sing Can a loners wishes ever turn somebody's wheel Can you say your hands can make that picture real It's going to a fallen friend Is where this arrow is flying And the water is rushing down can you feel it's patient pull Like any train out of any town is going to soothe a vagrant soul, whole!

Singing Bones Singing bones singing bones Oh pick up my singing bones Have a heart, bring it home I don't want to be alone My singing bones Oh the night has been so long Such a darkness in my heart When I've lost how love does feel Ever since we've been apart My singing bones Come on home my singing bones Oh come here my shining son You're the one that helps me heal It's your touch that makes it real My singing bones Oh my heart it beats so hard My knees get so weak Every time you kisses me I find it hard to speak My singing bones Speak up my singing bones I give to you a name And you give to me the same And all of us be changed To hear those singing bones

Mud Boot Road I live up an old logging road It used to be a milk wagon road But now it is just a mud boot road Season come and seasons go All I know is mud and snow On that mud boot road If you got holes in your shoes You can go and sing the blues Bout that mud boot road I know when I got friends They’ll come and see me end Of that mud boot road Go on down to your general store They’ll know what you’re looking for For that mud boot road Close the schools close the town Everybody’s slipping around On that mud boot road When the summer’s warm and dry Squish your toes in a fresh cow pie On that mud boot road I know when I’ve found my honey She’ll walk up that road that’s muddy On that mud boot road I get lost upon the trail Just by telling you this tale About that mud boot road With a big crow bar and a comealong You can help me sing this song About that mud boot road

Elemental Lullabye Brother sun and sister moon Opposing ones Will you sing me the sweetest of tunes You turn on your quarters and then off you go Trading the day for the night And the desert for snow That’s to say nothing of the people inside Who dance by the ocean and cry by the tide I’ve raged through so many stormy days Waiting for you to come by in some jolly parade And caught on the window and perched on the sill Came a moment when time stood still A message came through so loud and so clear Do what you want to and have no fear And I’ll cast myself across the byways and roads And I’ll see all of your shining faces and I’ll ask you to lay down your load By the word of the stone and of the wind The word of the water and the fire that burns within The cry of the babe and whispers of the old Can we balance heaven and what is down below
